I was reading this article and it caused me to start thinking, is there any real possibility of WWIII within say... the next 100 years? And if so which one of these nations would most likely be the instigator of such a war?

I think if anything it will be a alliance against radical power in middle east or alliances of radical powers. Most likely based in Iraq as Bush was right it was the treat because of its resources to create a power base from. The only reason a world war is the number of radicals Muslims around the world we see forming.

Manchurian candidate type politicians like Barack Obama are the source of our greatest risk. Our demise will come from within. In fact, it is already well underway.

Uh huh..... *backs away slowly*

OK onto the topic, currently the united states could take on the entire world....and either win or at least...not lose. That assumes nuclear weapons are not used. If nukes are used....everyone loses.

Who is our biggest contender? Hmmm...China or Russia. Even combined they couldnt take us. I dont see it now, I dont see it 10 years from now. Beyond that....it depends. And some technological breakthrough could change everything as well.

None of them have the infrastructure to do so. Only the UK has a professional enough military and the ability to project their power far outside of their borders.

None, no country in the world has a navy even remotly close to ours or could support logistics needed to wage war.

Wars amongst the strongest nations of the world are, and will continue to be, conducted by proxies in Third World nations. Those countries are the board and their people, like chess pieces, will experience and bear most of the brunt of actual combat, the casualties, and the destruction. Anything direct amongst the major powers will be economic and political. And one day, our reliance on machines to do the fighting will be total except in instances of asymmetric warfare.

[the same type of warfare that beat the British in 1776 will be the same type of warfare that could beat us]

Russia. There's legitimate reasons all these nations likely wouldn't engage in war in most any case. However, there's a significant part of the Russia population that has succumbed to a belief in an array of crazy conspiracy theories about the West.
