Ever contact your congressional representative (letter, email, call)? Did it work? Is it possible for an ordinary citizen to "lobby" on a cause or propose legislation?

My congressman was going to vote no on Obama care but after I sent him a strongly worded email with a lot of threats and f bombs he changed his mind

I always send letters, email and visit my representatives. Some are cool and listen to my views. Others are nasty and tell me I don't matter.

When Lloyd Doggett was my rep, he never returned calls or e-mail.
Now that Lamar Smith is my rep, I get a generalized reply.
John Cornyn also gives a generalized reply back
Now Ted Cruz, he replies back with specific answers to specific questions asked, along with things coming on the horizon to be aware of.

I phone mine all of the time. His staff even answers the calls past 5:00.
His attention is one reason why I'm considering to vote for a republican.

My local representative Robin Kelly is the absolute worst. I asked her why she supports banning guns but believes the system is too hard on gang bangers and she blocked me from her Facebook page (her official one). I firmly believe she is on drugs because when I've seen her she looks stoned. I see her in local parades and I will often swear at her, give her the finger or throw things at her because she is so rude to me.

Dick Durbin has always been cool and even when he disagrees is nice about it. I generally like him and have worked for him.

If you're going to contact Congress, the best method of correspondence is a personalized handwritten letter that is short, clear, polite and rational. However, allow at least three weeks just for letters to make it through security screening (been this way since around 9/11 when the anthrax attacks happened).

Next best method is at a local meet and greet if your rep or senator holds them, as long as you, unlike most posters here, come off as coherent and not deranged.

Calling their DC office is fine but just remember no matter how long you talk to the intern on the other end of the line, your conversation will be summed up as a tally mark on an issue spreadsheet. So might as well keep it succinct.
