I don't get it. Why does a person need a license to get married? It seems retarded to me. I think the whole license thing is just some Big.Gov intrusion into people's lives. Is it some national security thing? Just dump the whole thing and let people marry their boyfriend/girlfriend/martian/cousin/sister/whatever in any way shape or form.

Marriage licenses ask three important questions:

* Are you already married to someone else?
* Are you old enough to get married?
* Are you marrying someone you can legally marry?

And of course, they collect the fee. Even if they ignore everything else, you think the govt. will give up the fee?

I agree with the OP. The government shouldn't discriminate based on marital status.

Marriage is contract law. It legally combines them into a family, giving them family rights such as ICU visits and estate inheritance (among other things). It's not government intrusion, it's just government recognizing that you are choosing this person as somebody who is of a certain importance in your life.

It doesn't matter. Over a thousand laws are written based on the institution as it is, and there is inadequate reason to incur the cost of changing over a thousand laws to eliminate all reference to marriage.

Why should there be marriage licenses to begin with? Because the right of marriage - like all rights exist by law. See Post at:

To free people, none of that matters.
Government should not be in the marriage business period.

It is just another way to single out a group, to see if they are going to be a winner or a loser where government intervention is involved.

Please read my post. The reason government is "in the marriage business" is to expedite the most common contract between two people. Also, if there are any necessary changes that need to happen within that contract in which government needs to recognize your marriage, they can pass laws to amend then and you don't need to hire a lawyer again to rewrite it.

You are not at a disadvantage by being single, you are simply not choosing to participate in the marriage contract with anybody.

Not true at all. It is government intrusion. Otherwise, I could marry whoever I choose and however many I choose.

We don't need government control of our marriages. We do need contracts that specify relationship rights.

Both of those legally done without being "married"
Medical power of attorney, and a last will and testament.
