On Apr 20, 1871, with passage of the Third Force Act, popularly known as the KuKlux Act, Congress authorizes President Ulysses S. Grant to declare martiallaw, impose heavy penalties againstterrorist organizations, and use military force to suppress the Ku KluxKlan (KKK).
So,the KKK was included in “terrorist organizations” as far back as 1871. They exist today and focus on anti-Semitism and racism.
White supremacy or white supremacism,usually Christian based, is a more general grouping of which the KKK is one faction, promotes the belief, that white people are superior in certain characteristics, traits, and attributes topeople of other racial backgrounds and that therefore whites should politically, economically and socially rule non-whites. Violence is not out of the question.
ISIL claims superiority based on religion. They are an extremist Muslim group.
Both white supremacists and ISIL are extremist hate groups. I fail to see the difference. Yet, fear of “muslims” runs rampant is the subject of "fear" news daily, citing fear of losing “our Christian values”. But everyday white supremacy groups go about their business and there is no uproar. Racism in this country is downplayed – even dismissed by the white Christian majority. I don't get it.
Terrorism is Terrorism - regardless of wordsmithing
Words make a big difference … helps the vinegar go down. Remember when layoffs became “down-sizing”?
Well, our government often choses to use domestic “extremists” rather than “terrorists”. A 2013 report states the federal government uses “terrorists”and “extremists” interchangeably (pg5). And, rather than single out specific groups, it choses to identify general “threat” types. Also, domestic terrorists are Americans who commit ideologically driven crimes in the US, and lack foreign direction or influence (at least in 2013 report). This comes from Section 802 of the USA PATRIOTAct (P.L. 107-52. 18 U.S.C. Sectin 2331(5), domestic terrorism occurs primarily with the U.S. territorial jurisdiction, and domestic terrorism involves
(A) …acts dangerous tohuman life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or ofany State;
(B) Appear to be intended –
a. to intimidate orcoerce a civilian population;
b. to influence thepolicy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or
c. to affect theconduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping…
According to that definition, someone killing because of Al Qaeda, or ISIL influence would not be technically labeled a domestic terrorist, but an “extremist”, AND a white supremacist killing someone would be a domestic terrorist. Domestic terrorist “groupings” (leaderless or not) are homegrown ideologically driven. They are identified as:
· Animal rights extremists
· Environmental extremists
· White supremacists
· Anti-Government extremists
· Black Separatists
· Anti-abortion extremists
