This conversation has been on the rise in the last past 8 years.
I have been hearing statements about how the media is "Shoving" gay material down our throats and that it is turning people gay. These people claim it is now 'every where' when for me I seem to hardly if ever notice it. I cannot think of a single running show that leads with gays or many shows that even have them openly out on it. The closest thing would be Orange is the New Black which follows lesbians. Lesbianism is not seen as much of a 'threat' -- that is as long as its feeding into the straight males fantasy, if not it is never really seen...Yet still I cannot think of many major shows at where gay men are featured. I look at the news and it only seems to revolve around the controversial issue of marriage. Music-- nope cant think of a single hugely successfully openly gay man who are singing about anything remotely gay. Magazines. Nope. Books, nope.
However, when I look at society as a whole it HEAVILY pushes the Heterosexual agenda. I say heterosexual agenda because if people claim there is a gay one there HAS TO BE a straight one. I cannot think of a single Tv show or Movie that is not lead by a straight White male at where he and his friends romantic relations are not on full blown display. The straight males mind set consumes everything. Magazines are on fully display of sexy women every where. In fact I believe people where rising money so Kate Upton can be shoot in a bikini -- in space... It is hard for a person to not listen to music and hear a man talk explicitly about his females interest or fantasy. Hip-hop music takes it to a whole new level. Do I even need to mention music videos! But if you dare show to many men in a single video people will have a fit...... I cannot log onto any major news based web sites and see straight people getting married and people gushing over the pictures with a huge amount of positive comments. Anyone remember the recent picture of that Marine getting emotional while proposing to his wife before he left for duty -- people loved that picture. The majority of reading material promotes a heterosexual lifestyle . I cannot think of a single media that is not consumed with straight men sexualizeing women.
Which has me wondering. If the media can change a persons sexuality then NO MAN SHOULD BE GAY AND EVERY WOMAN should at least be sexually attracted to each other. I mean women out number men and im sure every where they turn they see half naked women or comparison of which women is sexier and why. Yet straight women still exist-- my mom is certainly one of these women.
I am just confused about this whole turning people gay because if you go back far enough you will probably see that 99.99% of people where born to straight parents so where dose this idea that the media can turn someone gay. If that debate is still going again the media should have change every guy who was 'born' gay before they even hit puberty. The majority of all gay people will probably tell you the first porn they saw was heterosexual-- in fact most will also tell you their first sexual experience was with the opposite gender. I am just saying it seems as if for a gay person to be who they are they would have had to look over a LOT of things that are constantly being shoved down their throats day in and out and yet straight people are kicking and screaming over short and minor love scenes....
It doesn't, but right-wing lunatics believe this because they actually believe being gay is a "choice" that people make. So, clearly just as the media can "force" you to buy a certain brand of soda, it can also "force" you to be gay. It is crazy logic, though at least it is internally consistent, which is above average for right-wing nuts.
If you really want to watch those clowns spin their wheels and make excuses, ask them when they *chose* to be straight. Not who their first crush was, or when they knew they first liked people of the opposite sex - when did they CHOSE to be straight? They have no answer... because that's not how biology works. But they'll whine and moan about it and look for every excuse to justify their insane notion that gay people are making that choice apparently just to tick them off.
Try to imagine the world from a right-winger's viewpoint - okay, don't actually reduce your IQ by 30 points for this exercise. Apparently, they actually think that there comes a point in every young man's life where he goes home and writes up a checklist comparing the advantages of being straight vs. being gay. Then, for some even more odd reason, chooses to be gay?! And that's the least crazy right-wing belief - the nuttier ones think evil spirits are involved!
Gays have always been in the media. It's just the acceptance level has increased and it isn't taboo anymore. Hollywood has always been Gay or do you not remember Rock Hudson?
rumncoke I wish I could rep you more. I actually got into an argument with a gay dude on a gay site a few years back because of this. There are actually a lot of gay men who sadly believe this too. He swore that straight people never broadcast their sexuality which is hilarious. They do it all the time. How many guys talk about their girlfriends, exes, crushes, wives or sex partners with mere strangers? It was fun, albeit pathetic, when he claimed that a man in a hospital who was talking to his coworker about going to a festival with his wife the previous weekend was being disrespectful because I was able to over here and figure out he was straight. Its sad that so many gay men truly see their sexuality as something to hide when straight people don't even recognize that as a concept. A long time ago I was speaking to a customer while working at starbucks. We were always encouraged to connect with the customers. One customer asked me about my weekend. I hesitated for a moment wondering if I should say me and my boyfriend went out of town, me and a friend went out of town, or use his gender neutral name. I realized that none of my straight coworkers would have given a second thought to answering the questioning and revealing they were in an opposite sex relationship. I was so ashamed of myself that from then on I decided to treat my sexuality no different than any straight person treats theirs. Sadly to many that is viewed as shoving it down there throats.

Straight guys shoots the breeze at work about his studly sexual exploits of the past, about how hot his wife is, about how many times they did it over the weekend. Asks the new guy in the department if he has a girlfriend. New guy: "No, I have a boyfriend". Straight guy: "Hey, too much information! I don't want to know what you do in the bedroom, Dude! Jeez, quit shoving it in my face!".

I think that is why this thread has so few replies. Only the brazenly hateful can offer a counter point. Unlike the race issue we can't tribalize sexuality. We can't say its them versus us because then they pop up in our group and we have to either weaken our social structure or family or learn to become less self centered.
Modern Family's adgenda is to promote homesexuality as normal.
