So how about you join us out in the real world? It shouldn't fall on the schools to teach sex ed or facilitate access to birth control, but if the other adults in those kids' lives aren't doing their job, it's damn well better for the kids that somebody does.

That being said, InformedConsent and I are rarely in agreement, but when it comes to barrier methods for teens, he's 100% right. Now, the one-two approach of combining hormonal birth control with condoms - even better. Even horny teens have a hard time of screwing that up, and they can screw everything up. But doctors of course need to be involved with hormonal methods.
I have to agree. Imagine that, huh? The one caveat I would add is definitely provide barrier methods for teen girls (and teen boys, they're not magically immune to STDs), and IF and only if the teen girl, her parent(s) or guardian(s), and her doctor are all in agreement, it should be their choice to add a hormonal contraceptive to the mix.

And, I'm a she.

I don't think that's as true as you've been led to believe.

Not only should girls insist on the guy to use a condom, she should carrying them in her purse to be prepared. Condoms treated with spermicidal lubricant offer an additional level of protection against STDs and pregnancy in case of accidental breakage. BC pills and IUDs don't offer this protection against STDs.
All good points.

Teenagers want and DO a LOT of things they shouldn't. Should we just throw up our hands and let them do whatever they please?
No, you try to do everything you can to help them make wise decisions. And if they're going to have sex, which is a biological urge that isn't necessarily on a timetable we would choose, why not try to help them do it as safely as possible?

Do/did you ever have kids?
I raised two daughters. They're college-educated adults now with good jobs. I was completely open with them about sex, addressing the pros and cons of early sexual activeness, and made sure they could always come to me with questions or help with choosing/acquiring contraceptives. Why wouldn't any loving parent do everything in their power to try to protect their teens from pregnancy and/or disease? I really don't get that.

Of course, they ban soda and chocolate bars because of "health risk." Makes sense, doesn't it?

What's next? Free abortions for 5th graders?
NYC schools give students the Plan B pill so you're not too far off here. They've been doing it since 2013.

Plan A - teach them to have sex at an early age.

Plan B - give them the abortion pill if pregnant.

Plan C - free abortions for everyone!

So you think you know what's best for other people's kids? Who anointed you with that power?

It is very common for parents to put their teen daughters on BC to " prevent Acne".
