To put things in perspective.

Sweden has admitted hundreds of thousands of refugees from the Iraq war and Syria. A war Sweden had nothing to do with. A country of only 9 million people. 16% of the population was born abroad vs 13% in the US.

Right, but what I'm sure the poster was getting at is that most of the 84 percent of those who are native are white. America has always had those pesky "others" that keep us from having nice things according to those of a certain bent.

Technological progress and civilization brings to everybody what was once only available to a few for less money and effort. In our own lifetime we have seen how the cell phone is now available to even the homeless. My daughter worked as a volunteer in a homeless cafeteria and was shocked to find out they have cell phones. This was once only available to heads of state, neurosurgeons, and the very extremely wealthy. And with technology this is now available to all.

If we are truly civilized we will find ways to provide more than what we need to ALL with little effort. AT this point the accumulation of wealth will be a moot point. We already see examples where wealth accumulation becomes moot. Many billionaires cannot spend the money they have in their life because it is simple too much. Therefore, they become philanthropists.

The problems is that we are a young country and still a bit barbaric whereas European countries are much older and past their barbaric stage.
I believe many of the Europeans countries will have fallen to Islam by 2500 so yes they will be highly barbaric which leads to poverty so not optimistic for the future there. It was only 70 years ago Europeans were killing Jews and others in the millions.

We have a partially Socialistic system but is less so than most European countries. I have doubts given our demographics that we would be as successful as the Danes have been if we implemented their system. I believe that the Socialistic system the Europeans have will crash in the long term....we'll see.

We are still uncivilized, no doubt. And there may very well be another economic model that is better,

Regarding mass transit being awful all over the world, you have yet to prove it.
Actually it's 23,000 in Denmark and $15,000 in the US, according to a poster here who is a Fit owner and has lived in both countries. The price of the Fit evidently was only about $11,200 in Denmark due to currency exchange rate and other factors, so you're buying an $11,000 car, and paying $23,000.

If you want to get into the weeds on Danish car tax, I have learned that it gets very complicated very fast.
https://www.cfe-eutax.org/taxation/road-tax/Denmark

But basically there is a 105% tax on the price of the car up to 76,400 DKK, and a 180% tax on anything over 76,400 DKK. I just cited the 180% number for the sake of simplicity. I simply stated that they have a 180% tax, which they do.

In Washington state, we pay about 10% sales tax on a car, and I thought that was bad. I drive the same vehicle many years because of that tax.

Speak for yourself. I am civilized. The terrorists in the ME trying to turn back the clock to reinstall 4th century policies are the uncivilized people.

I have no issues in admitting we are uncivilized and still have a long way to go. Technologically we are still in the neanderthal stage. I think you need to look ahead a bit more.

Workers produce the same output as 60 years ago in a much shorter time than before. In a civilized society, the people get to enjoy the fruits of this improvement. Either by reduced work and more leisure or higher incomes. The US could have 20 hour work weeks today and income levels as in 1970. Instead, income levels have hardly budged in 40 years while working hours have just increased.

As another poster has noted, as far as the 180 percent excise tax goes, that's at best a gross misinterpration .. more likely an outright distortion.
All I need to get to "we" is one other person besides me. I think I can find the one other person besides myself who will fight the 180% car sales tax. Hope that clears it up for you.

So you can't justify, defend, or explain that Amtrak fiasco, and instead want to give me a homework assignment. No thanks.

The 180% tax does exist in Denmark. See the link above. My interpretation of 180% is 180%. What is yours? If I had said '200%' that would have been an 'outright distortion.'

They also have a twice per year "green tax" on cars, and a $5.41/gal gas tax.

Guess that will buy them a lot of those cheeseburgers that cost $16 to produce and sell for $9.50.

Well I am civilized and I do see how thin the veneer of civility is in others.

As for living in Denmark vs. USA. You become accustomed to where you live. Optimism is the normal setting for human nature [per our staff psychiatrist]. People adapt, adopt or reconfigure.
