Just because you don't see hurricanes in the Atlantic one year, doesn't mean hurricanes/typhoons don't exist. The east coast US isn't the world. Mexico, Philippines, Guam, and CNMI saw a lot of typhoons this year. But it didn't make landfall in the mainland US, so it doesn't count

They would not claim 'awe that's just the US," they'd claim the weather events occurring in the US do constitute the world, just as they claim the weather in the Arctic constitutes the world.

Without the other two storm fronts, Sandy would have run along the coast and fizzled out.

Not since Hurricane Wilma ripped through southern Florida in October has a major hurricane made landfall in the U.S. That’s a 10-year lag that marks the longest such period on record since 1861 to 1868, they said.
In fact, Florida had not gone more than 5 years without a major hurricane at any point since record keeping started, the meteorology experts added.
But their close look at Atlantic storms during the last decade suggests that luck “has played a significant role.” For example, systems such as Hurricane Earl in 2010 moved away from the coastline at the last minute. And Hurricane Ike in 2008 dropped just below major hurricane strength when it moved toward Texas.
I wonder if the headlines would claim it was just 'luck,' if our weather had been the exact opposite over the past decade?
It's the same way the AGW crowd explains away the almost two decade "pause" or "hiatus,"with no increasing rise to the average global surface temperatures. The doom and gloom climate bloggers and scientists claim the pause in global temps was just a natural climatic cycle of the earth. But let the opposite occur and it's heralded as more proof of man-made global warming from CO2.
"The Pacific Decadal Oscillation has a very distinctive pattern. During the positive phase, surface temperature rises more rapidly," he said. "During the negative phase, the rate of temperature increase slows down, hence a hiatus. It's very compelling when you see the actual observations."
Loeb showed measurements during his talk demonstrating steady increases in surface air temperature from 1920 to 1940 and again from 1976 to 2000, periods when the decadal oscillation was in a positive phase. From 1940 to 1975, and again beginning in 2001, temperatures leveled out in concert with negative oscillation phases.
So, apparently the warming during the later part of last century was a direct cause from human induced CO2, and not the natural cycles of El Nino that raised temps. However, it's a natural climatic cycles of the earth when an El Nina cools the temps during the past two decades. Or at least that is how the explanation of our climate has been distorted by the news media and politicians.
I'll just ignore what you said, look down my nose in the other direction humpf, and focus somewhere else.
I have to wonder. Where does the wind begin ? It has to start somewhere doesn't it ? Do politicians create it when they talk. Or is that just breaking wind ?

The new way to look at ALL WEATHER is climate change.
Because if we look at details, information and data you will find that its easier to just call something a term then deal with the POLITICAL BS and FALSE FEAR MONGERING of climate change promoters.
So today when it rains remember someone, somewhere is telling you the world is ending and its climate change. We must DO something and that usually involves some plan to tax, and spend and gather votes over weather.

El Nino was the main culprit in both the big East Pacific season and the tame one in the Atlantic in 2015. Strong El Ninos tend to increase sheer levels across the Atlantic, which rips storms apart before they can get too strong.
