How about everyone who thinks men and women are equal are just called humans...and everyone else is called a sexist?
That cuts down on the confusion.
Problem solved.

Most women are feminist whether they realize it or not. So someone that openly claims to be a feminist is probably also a serious leftist/communist. Simple answer then; NO.

I hear these feminist, aside from just wanting things as simple as wanting equal pay for equal work, they actually have the balls to want to want acceptance in all facets of life...
Good lord, you give these women an inch and they take the whole damn ruler...... I swear, this desire to be equal and visible and to be heard is just something else......
If a woman has to tell you she's a feminist then you have nothing to worry about. I've found that anyone with extreme views with make that known with the little thing they say. They are obsessive and can't help themselves from revealing their ignorance. If a woman holds deeply negative views about men you will know by the statements she makes here and there.
With that said, feminist does not equal man hater. And I don't see why it would be a deal breaker. But to each his own.
I believe it depends on what the person calling themselves a feminist means(in context of the op) but I will say that as a woman every woman I've met that's verbally stated "I'm a feminist" has always been white and when they state how they are a feminist and why, I quickly realize I have nothing in common with them at all and don't feel a sisterly bond. I won't elaborate but needless to say they get a lot of eye rolls from me.
I did end up going off on one of these types during a class discussion once because she kept generalizing all women together talking about the past and I had to school her on the fact that black women in the past did not have the same experiences as white women, and that even today we don't. As a black woman my experience has always been that people consider my race before my femininity and that my experiences and history(in terms of black women) are very different from many of the proclaimed white feminist. In any case I never understand their perspective on things and don't claim the feminist title but I am for woman's rights and equality. I guess it depends on the woman in question. *shrugs*

Oh, good grief! Few people go around broadcasting that they're a feminist, anyway. The "openly claiming" bit is a non-issue.
The Bern is a socialist. Does that mean he's a feminist? just wondering. Is Hillary a communist?

It sounds like the classmate comes from some kind of sheltered environment. The women's movement evolved past that particular form of myopia back in the 80's already, but clearly that development passed some women by. Sorry to hear about that. You educated someone, that day.
I've never call myself a feminist or put any labels on myself.
If it is not apparent I am equal, then that's their problem. If it's a situation that directly impacts me, they I come to them as an equal and state my case.
Running around proclaiming being a feminist is like claiming your classy. Chances are you are saying because you are not showing it.
