It seems poor whites see themselves as being "above" poor Blacks and poor Hispanics based only on the fact that they are white.
I'm looking to better understand what drives this thinking.
Nobody cares about losing their job to foreigners until they lose their job to a foreigner. It's not a white/black/Hispanic issue these days. It's a "hey maybe we shouldn't let China buy all the buildings and land" and a "hey lets not send all of our entry level and midlevel jobs overseas" issue.
People live where they are from and have family/connections.
Self segregation is a thing, we can't social engineer it out of anyone.

They are still first-class citizens. That is why. Eventually one of them will finally make something of themselves.
Most "nice" neighborhoods are predominately white, and affluent. Is it really so strange that in spite of not being rich, people want to live in nice neighborhoods? I don't think it's just white people either.

For the most part, different races, ethnicities, and cultures have always segregated (not just whites) . People tend to move to communities that they most identify with, nothing racist or xenophobic about that.
White privilege is not evenly distributed; privilege is incremental and compartmental. Upper middle class white people (male and female) ooze with privilege; poor and working class whites, not so much. When I was young and living in a college town, my white privilege was obvious to me. As a poor and older white person living in a bigger city, my white privilege in housing has almost entirely disappeared - the only housing sector in which any remains is in the bottom-tier room-renting sector on CL. Which still beats the pants off the alternative if that is your economic level.

Poor whites? What, are you insinuating that middle-class, and upper-middle-class, and wealthy white people don't do this as well?
