Ridiculous that you can legit buy an assault rifle that would normally only be used in a war between armed combatants in America. Buts I got to have my assault rifle!!! What if the perps got an assault rifle? What if the perp has a rocket launcher? Does that entitle you to own a tank?
I support general gun-ownership in America since it is there to stay in. But they really need to at least pretend they are screening people with any semblances of seriousness, and stop selling freaking army grade hardware.
Why? Should we stop selling faster computers and phones with cameras to prevent child porn? Your argument is just as specious
It's a sign of the times. Go back 30 or 40 years and nobody cared if you owned an assault rifle or not. There were more important issues on the national stage like jobs, education, etc.

We-ll, 30-40 years back, people did care.
30 years back, they closed the machine gun registry so no new guns could be in the supply. I would call that "caring".
In the 70's, I remember my father saying there was no use for civilians to have such a rifle, if one wanted to have such rifle, join the Army (he'd probably disown me these days). I don't know if there was a push in the 70's against AR-15's but I do know that there were various pushes to ban one kind of gun or another, such as suggestions to ban handguns entirely or ban "Saturday Night Specials".
Just a tidbit, as I understand the latter situation, a reason they didn't is that such a ban would disarm a vast portion of the population who couldn't afford better.
In the 1970's, AR-15's weren't very controversial. Heck, up until the late 1980's you could find them in Woolworth's or even sporting goods stores in the local mall.

In the 70s, we weren't a nation of mindless little pu**ies. The education system has been a success in the minds of leftists. High school graduates can't read or do math, but they have been indoctrinated.

"I just graduated, where's my six figure job?"
It seems like our society has moved to one that's heavy on opinion, light on fact. Just look at people in this thread that want to ban "military grade AR-15's". There's no such thing, the military doesn't use AR-15's.

You do understand that the AR-15 is not a machine gun......right?

I'd say they do:
