I listened to an episode of the Tom Woods show where they talked about why the ratio seems even more lopsided these days... And he's a Harvard economist/historian, author, and academic, so he knows a thing or two about it.
The basic conclusion was that it's hard to get hired if you're a known conservative (or libertarian), partly because they're looking for someone who will fit in, but there's also the fact that simply challenging a lot of the more progressive-leaning academics is career suicide. A lot of ideas are assumed to be fact when they're very debatable, especially in fields like history and economics.
So basically, it's natural for people to hire like-minded people, and if you do manage to sneak in, rocking the boat won't be good for your career.
And those who can't do either say stupid crap on a message board.
As you have so aptly demonstrated.
