Which would fit my narrative very well. I've stated that the people could give up their guns when the authorities give up theirs.

Wrong. Not all areas/cities do things the same way. Here in this small Michigan town the deputy had a gun and it was taken away from him by a guy they were putting into a holding cell on the third floor of the court house. Procedures in that area of the court house have been known to need upgrading.
