The "big pay" on that was checkmating the USSR on controlling the world through controlling space. Only we weree dumb enough to agree not to weaponize space. If NK or Iran got the ability to enter space do you really think they'd care about condemnations in the New York Times?

No it was actually all the technology that came because of the space race. The Soviets never really had chance with their economic system.

But the aviation industry was heavily subsidized.

Remind me why fossil fuels still need subsidies after over a hundred years?

I'm not worried about it.

Did you know that in 1957 when Sputnik was launched?

Lowell Massachusetts has the Largest Power Canal System put a power plant on the North Canal. Right now there is a power station on 1 of the 6 canals, putting out 24 mega watts. If they did the same thing to all the canals (all of them fall 32 feet) they would have about 120 megawatts. That is about 1/5th of what the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant puts out, that is worth something. In Lawrence, MA a Hydroelectric Plant produces 16.4 megawatts, and the North Canal, where the majority of the power was in the old days is untapped
There are plenty of untapped ones as well, as coal plants get shut down, its worth a look. Fall River and Manchester lacks a hydroelectric dam, and the Hydropower available for mills was on par with what Lowell and Lawrence had.

Interesting and thanks. I'll rep this post in spite of our partial disagreement.

Of course not. Does that somehow disprove that much of the major technological breakthroughs of the last century were due to public and private collaboration. Good thing we subsidize higher education and have the best university of the world. Is that only okay when facing a major enemy?

Well it's amusing how much you seem to dislike renewable and their limitations but don't share the same sentiment about a rather old technological breakthrough (internal combustion engine).
