In this case the Chairman and CEO are the founders and owners of Ashley, the world's largest manufacturer of furniture. Most of their stuff is made in China and exported to the US where it is assembled. A small percentage of furniture is made in the USA.

In 2015 they settled with a $1.76 million fine with the Department of Labor for numerous OSHA safety violations. There were more than 1000 worker injuries over a 3 year period in theif Wisconsin facility.

According to the press in Mississippi, most of the jobs lost will be their gain as the facility had been expanded in recent years.

If you read the original source you will see that Ashley already has excess capacity in their existing factories and decided to layoff their CA workforce to shift production so that they can take advantage of their spare capacity.

"The majority of production in Colton will move to U.S. plants in Wisconsin, Mississippi and North Carolina, “where we can tap into existing capacity and increase efficiency,” the statement continued.

“By shifting the majority of Colton production to other U.S. facilities we will create more efficiency and better use of existing capacity in our manufacturing network,” the Ashley statement read."
Exactly!

I'm guessing, no -- they would go buy something made in China and grouse about the 'high prices' at Ashley.
Throw rocks if you must but you know I'm right.

And I am NOT advocating for cheap labor. I am simply saying we as a nation of consumers buy the lesser priced options and force the producers to cut corners where ever they can or lose business
Democrats destroyed the import tariffs that would allow higher standards of living in this country to remain viable.

Instead they want TPP, which would enable that much more globalist free trade. (Yes, it is Obama's fault, odanny.)

Do you wonder, for just a moment, why they are shutting the only Western facility down? Why not shut the Wisconsin, Mississippi or North Carolina facility down instead?

I once worked for Ashley ... years ago. Back then it was mediocre second rate furniture. Nowadays it is third rate crap.

Their furniture is NOT made in the US ... in California nor anywhere else. It is made in China. They just assemble it and/or repackage it.

There's more to this story than the speculation about $15 / hr wage, within the OP's link.

Looks like the Colton facility was in the midst of organizing.
