That must be why our mayor is pledging to add 280 cops. I hope he gets it done. I welcome more police, I am grateful when I see them while I'm out on the streets working in the worst area of the city. It's a definite start but other things need to happen too, such as education, jobs, mentoring, etc. I don't really have the solution but I know there are people out there trying. I commend them, they're at least trying things rather than pounding on a keyboard pointing fingers at others.

3,000 shot but 512 dead, according to the article.

Those thugs are seriously in need of target practice/training; that would keep innocent bystander deaths down, at least.

It's a generational thing, as the gang members of today had grandfathers and even great grandfathers that were in gangs. You can't just expect a city that is institutionalized with gangs at every level to suddenly become gang or crime free.

Just the way it is unfortunately.
You can look at raw numbers or homicide rates.

By raw numbers, Chicago wins, right now.

By homicide rates, it's not even Top Ten.

Most homicides are concentrated in five out of 25 Police Districts.

Back in the 80-90', during the Crack epidemic, homicide rates in all major cities were substantially higher than current rates. Used to be local LE had a shot at brokering peace between rival gangs. Gangs today have splintered into thousands of factions with no central leadership. You don't have 5 ringleaders calling the shots anymore.

Former NYC Mayor Guilianni never fails to take a bow for the substantial reduction of homicides in NYC during his watch. What he fails to mention is that homicides plummeted all over the US and 20 years later, there are no definitive conclusions, why, beyond that the crack epidemic eventually subsided.

While the Chicago shooters ( when caught) usually have a gang affiliation, the shootings are most often provoked by personal disputes that have nothing to do with gang business. Social media is being used to exacerbate these conflicts.

Often times wittnesss do not come forward. People protect their own or fear retaliation.

State laws for bail, Minimum Sentencing and parole are lax compared to NY state. Some blame it on black activists. Some blame it on 2nd Amendment Advocates who don't want grandma held to the same standard as a hood rat. Some blame it on a state so broke ( due to 65 years of bipartisan generosity to unions) that it does not have the funding to keep criminals in prison without increasing taxes.

Gangs are the retail face of drug sales.

No way to fix hood rat. No shortage of low wage jobs available for unskilled people. Why work some crappy job when you can sling some dope and make relatively good money selling heroin to suburban addicts.

Police officers are in self preservation mode. Nobody has their' backs. If you have a family to go home to, why would you risk not seeing them again in order to save the lives of unappreciative hood rats who do nothing to better their' own communities, and don't even cooperate with the cops when they try to make things better. Crime is going up in all black communities because cops have withdrawn. How pathetic and sad is a group of people who whine and complain against the same people who protect them from killing each other.

Since the 1960's our government has spent over a trillion dollars on blacks. With all the effort and money that has been put forth one can only conclude there is no solution. Perhaps it is time to declare these high crime black neighborhoods a wasteland and pull out all resources including police and firefighters.

Thugs actually controls certain parts of the city after dark. Can Dem's be trusted with Law Enforcement!

Since the President Obama has demonized basic law enforcement the thugs are going after the police. today in Philly a officer was ambushed by a man who hated police.

It quite a campaign promise given POTUS has no influence or control over local crime or state judicial systems.

I DON'T get it at all, I really don't.

Back in the day us "Irish" had probably as bad or worse rep that the hoot rats of 2016 with our drinking, brawling and so on.

Tho looking back on it; I truly thought the "Black" fools pretty much offed each other 30 years ago and the new generations would decide to get straight. I was wrong, so I DON'T know what it's gonna take, especially since even ghetto Black women usually DON'T have more than 2 kids now.

Thank you for being a voice of reason. This is not about Democrat vs Republican. This is about the gang culture that has existed in Chicago for a long time.

Seattle, Portland, Denver, San Jose, San Francisco, Denver, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Madison(Wisconsin), Columbus(Ohio), Austin, these are all liberal, Democratic cities. They have low murder rates.
