Everyone that's ever supported unions has already been on this track. It's Conservatives that are suddenly "seeing the light," asking Trump to do what unions have historically force their companies to do.

I don't know a lot of unions lately have been pretty supportive of globalization and foreign workers. I've always been a conservative and pro-working and middle class and seen the use for unions as a private sector solution to worker advocacy.

I got a great set of restaurant grade Oneida flatware at Walmart for 25 bucks...made in China.

Do you guys know GM sells more cars in China than in America?
Do you know middle class Chinese prefer American makes over Japanese ones, unlike American consumers?

Do you know KFC makes most profits from China?

Do you know China imports beef, chicken, corn, wheat ... from America in large quantities?

And they will continue to do so or starve.

They need us more than we need them.

Maybe. But they also have a higher level of tolerance on poverty.
Their central government can adjust the redistribution of wealth very fast. Can't say the same thing for America.

What will you feel if your purchasing power reduces 50% now? What will the people who live paycheck-to-paycheck think?

Just reducing the trade deficit by 25% with China would be quite an accomplishment, without starting non-productive hostilities. The fact is, that if China lost us as a customer, they would go under. I'm sure they realize that, but they're just hoping that they can continue things as they have been. But trying to completely eliminate all the deficit at once, would just cause chaos that would effect many players in the trade world. We should promote any changes in stages. We could put many of our own marketing giants in trouble, if we try to move things too fast. And besides, I like to be able to direct-order cheap camera gadgets from them.

No, they will just buy German cars instead and Brazilian beef. Too bad for car manufacturers and farmers in the Midwest. Losing their biggest costumer will be very rough.

You cant. There are entire categories not made anywhere but asia.
Whirlpool makes the vast majority of their appliances in North American and most even in the US... Except microwaves... from china.

You are going to have to create entire industry chains, not just single factories.

I do support stages and increasing manufacturing tho.

he can't. even if you think that's desirable, it is way too ambitious of a goal.

, how should this be done?

(A). 0 = 0 approach. Severe tie with China. This would be equivalent to the end results of a total trade war.

(B). x = x approach. US Export quota to China is set such that exports = imports.
A. is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. As our economy collapses, we will be able to take solace in the fact that China's is collapsing worse. Wonderful.

B. is not completely insane, but still works like a very awkward, blunt instrument. And for what? How about explain your reasoning why you think trade deficits are such a high priority that we would jettison our economy into the sun.
