The issue is that many Trump supporters are rural and don't understand how powerful cities have gotten. There is certainly a country vs city battle going on, but economically the country life has lost decades ago.
The US doesn't need California, but California does need the US.
Maybe. Maybe not. Asia certainly would have an interest in the intellectual and innovation hub of the globe. It would certainly be a blow to the US. The other innovation hub is in the NE, not exactly Trump breeding ground either.
What would happen if the US lost the West Coast and New York to Mass? That's a lot of population and economy.
