I'm sure that is not entirely the case.

The problem is that welfare was created for a noble reason, but has been so bastardized that it is now causing the ripping apart of the family fabric. It is harming the poor, the very people the left claim to want to help.

At one time it made sense to only pay welfare to unmarried/divorced/abandoned mothers because there were so few. They needed the help and still do. Now though, the poor are actually having babies for bigger checks. They have become baby making mills for federal dollars. If they get married, the checks stop, so why would they get married?

The grand idea was righteous, but is no longer. The welfare system needs to be reworked and modernized. It needs to encourage marriage and parenting, not rip it apart as it is doing now.

I am 30 as well. I will be 31 this year. When I got my first full time job with benefits, I knew taxes were going to come out of my check. I figured that was a given. Considering that was the most money I had ever been paid in my life(myself personally), I didn't care.

I didn't become conservative until I was a few days into college. Thing is, issues like gay marriage and abortion were things that eluded me. I never joined any political groups in college. However, a few college Republicans managed to persuade me to become a Republican. This in addition with the religious right managed to turn me conservative. I voted for Bush in 2004.

What turned me the other way? Hurricane Katrina and the way it was handled. Eventually I started to think about socialism and environmental issues. I started becoming more liberal. Being a broke college student and having intermittent employment will do that.

Personally, most of my concerns are locals. I want a better public transportation system(metro Atlanta isn't that great in that regard). Cost of living is on the rise as the housing market has rebounded. I lived in a conservative area (I still do, but not because I want to).

Currently my concerns are whether or not President Trump will implement stop and frisk, and/or turn things into police state 2.0.

When it came to social and economic issues, this is how I've viewed things. I am still against abortion. However, I've treated gay marriage as something that isn't any of my business. Gay marriage has never been a personal threat to me. I have learned more libertarian when it comes to marijuana and guns. Locking someone up for smoking a joint is stupid. Guns, well, that is one's 2nd amendment rights, and one should be able to protect themselves. Economics, well, I never thought about it. Issues about taxes always eluded me, until I got a full time job. When I got one, well, I'm not too thrilled. However, that isn't my biggest threat.

The things that have been threats to me, historically, have been anyone who would look down on me, anyone who would try to beat me up or kill me, or anyone who would make it hard for me to make a living. Gay marriage never threatened me.

George W. Bush, 2004. In fact, I've mentioned it in other posts on this thread.

In Australia, I've always been supportive of the labour party (which is akin to America's democrats).

Btw, I did a quiz test for the American political systems and I ended up as 80% democrat/20% republican (bad thing?). Even though I'm siding with Trump and totally loathing the radical left's reaction on him. Weird.

The thing is that tests (like the one you took) can be skewed in any way the author decides. I've taken some tests that are so bias, one way or the other, that it's painfully obvious.

The Pew test is a fair one to take

Political Typology Quiz | Pew Research Center

The compass test is also decent

Communism tends to produce a very, very small "elite" class.......maybe with your support of the Dems, you will somehow squeeze in???
Don't bet on it.

You are a young man, employed, and single. I see you whine about this or that on CD often. If I was your age I wouldn't be posting on any internet board, much less City Data. I had much more important things to do.

You voted for GW at 18? I was a rabid liberal at 18. It wasn't until I was earning money, paying taxes, and living in the real world (out of college) I switched to being Republican.

We're working on it.....my VERY conservative governor has been working overtime to reduce taxes and welfare. And of course, the leftists and cuckservatives have fought him every step of the way.

I want nothing to do any more with the Republican party as it is, with Trump in it's head.
I am debating whether to remain a Democrat or switch over to be an Independent.
(I am a bit upset with the Democratic party and what they did with Bernie especially.)

But the GOP is really the party of the ultra wealthy, or the religious right who seem to want a theocracy,
could care less about Liberty and freedom, and want to shove their morality beliefs down everyone else's throat.
They want freedom for corporations and billionaires, but don't seem to mind shackling the citizens.
Interesting: you went from Republican to communist. Probably best that you left.....

FYI: statistics clearly show that the Democrat Party is now the preferred home of the ultra rich, Wall Street, Silicone Valley, etc.
Sorry to disturb the narrative.
