I have read so many posts from people who say they won't buy Made in China. I just read one thread accusing China of causing Autism. Another poster said that all things made in China were sub-junk. Yet another observed that all China made was lousey back scratchers that leave slivers in your back. So why buy anything from them? Would you support an out right ban on China goods?

I am not so sure the US would do very well with such a ban. (How would we scratch our backs?) Nor do I think it would ever be enacted into law.

What? WalMart would close!

I wouldn't; then again I don't buy tons of junk.
I do get some wonderful teas from China (hence, for all the tea in China phrase); I visit there now and again.

I'd be more concerned about the quality of the water in the US and our own food supply.

Hi Chelgirl

Seems that the "don't buy China" crowd would also like to see Walmart out of business too.

Do you go to China on biz or just personal travel?

People in my neck of the woods seem to constantly criticize US food stuffs. The mass production methods in the US and shipping of veggies all over the planet seems a bit gilded. The same people who wanted the Calistoga organic lettuce in NY back in the 80s are now changing their tune as it created a huge carbon footprint for that salad to get there.

Pleasure travel. I have friends who live there so I pop over once in a while.

I wouldn't mind seeing Walmart go out of business, but for other reasons.

I guess it is always easier to blame others instead of investigating what the true problem is.
But if Chinese products are indeed faulty because the Chinese aren't strict on health regulations and we still buy their stuff because it is cheap, I'd say the free economy is to blame.
The economy is not so 'free' that you can skip (international) health regulations to produce cheaply, but we also should not just buy things 'blind' by only looking at the price tag.

I think people are more concerened over the economic reperusions of buying chinese things than lack of quality. While I dont think we should ban them I think we should impliment tarrifs that put our products on the playing field as theirs.
The biggest reason they blow us away price wise is the working conditions & pay.
Its a bit immoral to live here & support child labor laws & have legislate safe working practices & then go buy stuff from a country with such huge human rights issues.

I don't think Americans are concerned about the economic repercussions of buying cheap junk. They're trying to save a buck.

Greg Brown sings:
We have no knowledge, So we have stuff/Stuff without knowledge is never enough.

If enough Americans used their own personal boycott power, that would make an impact and send a message. Let the market take care of itself.

I am beginning to think that we are addicted to cheap junk. Without these trinkets we, and our credit driven economy, would go into massive and painful withdrawal. Let us start by "Just saying NO" the next time we are tempted to by something we want but do not need on credit we do not have.
