I'm much more of a protectionist than a true capitalist when it comes to international trade.
I'm also one of those people who won't buy some items online, because I want them to retain local distribution where I can touch them before buying.
Certainly the buy local movement has existed for a long time.
But deep down, a lot of those folks are anti-corporate and anti-capitalist. Trump has coopted that traditional left message and rebranded it to the Republican party.
Back in the 1980's, a collection of hacks in the Pennsylvania legislature inserted a provision in a bill requiring American-made steel in all state-financed construction. A whistle-blower discovered a few British-made beams in a prison conversion then under way, but rather than simply fine the contractor for the violation, a few dim-bulbs in one of the unions insisted that the "offending" construction be ripped out, and replaced at taxpayer expense.
More work for "duh union", of course., but they're forgetting who has to pay the bill. Economic ignorance has, regrettably, become a feature in the agenda of both major parties.
Sure, in a free market, companies could operate and hire anywhere in the world.
But in that free market, a person could freely legally work anywhere in the world.
Since that's obviously not the case, why pretend it is?
If other countries are going to be protectionist and restrict foreign individuals from being employed in their country, then the US would have to be a sucker to not take the same approach.
Otherwise, it's just the typical situation where those in the US give, give, give, and the rest of the world will take, take, take.
