Many of the artilces are condensed and one has to sit down and fully read the artilcle to get the whole story of what is actually going on here. People are understandably upset over the idea of such a barbaric practice. Prosecuters do believe she performed genital mutilation. Medical evidence points to her guilt but she is claiming she didn't do it. My main point is that there is no religious defense for genital mutilation (and her lawyers are not claiming that). It is a federal crime and if she is convicted she faces prison.
Female Leftists who defend this practice should be forced to undergo it. Male leftists defending it should have it done to their current and future partners.
NOBODY is is defending it! I have not heard of a single person defending this horrific practice. Stop the partisan crap!
She hails from Gujarati, India a predominately Hindu area of the country with a small population of Baloch Muslims, a fringe group, obviously stuck in this mindless cultural tradition.
I have not come across anything that discloses when she immigrated to the US. She might have been a child or perhaps in conjunction with her education. She is likely a US citizen.
She chose to put a mindless cultural tradition before US Law. Her choice has consequence. Seize her assets, strip her of her license to practice and put her into the general prison population.
The parents of the children subjected to this barbaric procedure should be prosecuted.
Minnesota almost passed a bill like this recently that would have imposed penalties on the parents including losing custody but it didn't get a final reading. Ten states do hold the parents responsible including CA, NY, and IL.
I could see some litigation in the future where adult women start suing their parents (and "doctors") for pain and suffering/mental anguish. The more deterrents the better.
