Hindsight being almost perfect sight...

The draft ended 4 years before I was eligible to serve. Had I been drafted, as a person obedient to authority back then, had I been drafted, I most likely would have gone.

As a middle age adult, knowing what I know now, about the draft, about the war, and about my country, I'd probably would have been like Ali and refused to be drafted.

I think this is probably one of the major reasons that older people are not drafted - they are more likely to tell the board to go to hell.

But I am curious about what others think... If you had been drafted at a young age, but knowing all the things you know now, would have served when called?

that depends, the draft ended a year before i graduated high school, but even then by that time the draft was winding down, and all you really had to do then was register for the draft, much like today, but the chances of you being drafted were virtually zero at that point since the armed forces were being drawn down.

that said, if the draft were in effect at the time i graduated, and i was drafted, i would have served.

Neither me or my husband would. We are conscientious objectors who are opposed to violence (especially my husband, who is a Quaker).

I'm 26 and he's 32, so we're still young enough to be drafted if it's resurrected, and this where we stand on the issue. If we risked imprisonment, oh well. Better than being forced to do harm unto others.

I joined the US Air Force voluntarily right out of high school. Hindsight 20/20, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

We are close in age. I turned 18 the year they started making you register again. I did........ With hindsight, no I would not go if drafted. If someone asks me today, I tell them I would not sign up.

I attended a Quaker church in my teen years.....granted, that was many years ago and being a teen I probably only paid limited attention but I don't recall much talk on war. Granted, it was a rare lucky time when we were not at war.

The only local Quaker church meets very sporadically.

I would've signed up voluntarily. But like my father did during Vietnam, I would not have complied with the draft. My life is my own. I wouldn't have run off to Canada, or looked for a deferment. The music has to be faced, and I would've faced it.

I will not be forced to fight an unjust war against anyone. If it's a righteous war, you won't need to draft me. I'll be the first in line to fight.

Unless Congress has declared war, the draft is not acceptable to free people.

The people are the militia. The draft is the mechanism for the militia to be called to duty, of those that consent.

No, I would not.

But if I am forced to go, then I will try to be the best soldier I can be.

The war must be a just one. Only THEN is it acceptable.
