If anyone bothered to see what he tweeted back then it was Comey better "wish" there are no tapes of their conversation. Clearly an attempt to intimidate Comey and muddy the waters. It was a total distraction. Typical bullying tactic from the Donald.
My gut feeling is that he was bluffing, but, with Donald Trump you never know the truth. I can see where someone with a fragile temperament as he has might want to have a recorder going. After all, he sees this gig as an extension of his little reality show.
But, the bottom line is, what a childish game he was playing withholding whether or not he had tapes. "I'll show you when I am ready !" It just makes him look even more stupid than people thought.
