This is why Trump is complaining:

Quote:
"To make the idea work, it is important for all members to make sure their armed forces are in good shape. So NATO sets an official target on how much they should spend. That currently stands at 2% of GDP. The 2% target is described as a "guideline." There is no penalty for not meeting it. "

NATO funding: How it works and who pays what - Mar. 20, 2017
Guidelines - Schmuidelines. The problem is guildelines instead of rules and the lack of penalty allowing some countries to be deadbeats. NATO, to me, is like the UN in that regard.

The United States just keeps trying to shoehorn itself into the affairs of other regions. If the European nations don't value NATO as much as we do, then we're the idiots, not them! Why do Americans care more about Europe's security than the Europeans do? Again, these are our economic competitors, and spending billions of US taxpayer money on their defense while they take six week annual vacations and enjoy universal health coverage is insulting and SHOULD be insulting to the average American.

Because no president since Carter has been able to get NATO to pay their fair share.

After two world wars starting because of Europe, it is in our national interest to try and prevent a third war.

And the 'pay more' is pay more into their OWN military budget not to some secret little fund in NATO.

It's absolutely freak'n ridiculous and makes no logical sense -- but it appeals to his base. They all want him to pay their dues (which do not exist -- there are no dues -- there are no payments owing NATO)....ugh

Exactly. The simple answer to the question is that Trump doesn't know how NATO works.

WHAT IS FAIR SHARE? OF WHAT?

That's not even what Trump is asking for.

He is referring to the 2% of GDP that it is RECOMMENDED EACH country in NATO budget for their OWN military defense.

That's the 2%

I don't think anyone is arguing this point? It seems that most here understand that but say it in a different way.
