A Virginia man faces up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to killing a bald eagle today, first by shooting the bird of prey and then running it over with an all-terrain vehicle, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement.
The Justice Department said the 62-year-old Smithfield resident Allen H. Thacker shot the eagle, according to a statement of facts filed with his plea agreement, because "he was upset it had been hunting and taking fish from a pond located on his property."
Saw my first bald eagle about 20 years ago on the Susquehanna about 20 miles south of the NY border. Just spent the weekend fishing on the Susquehanna about 50 miles south of that location and there was numerous ones flying around. Their population has grown enormously in this area since, this was an area I spent a lot of time time at as kid and there was none. At one point I caught a really small smallmouth that ate the hook, it was dead and floating by the time I got the hook out. As we were floating down it looked like one of them was scoping out the area it would be floating in but it didn't go for it. That would have been fantastic.
National symbol or not large birds of prey are an awesome sight just watching them gliding along the updrafts. Not sure what would possess someone to kill such a bird.

supposedly it was taking too many fish out of his pond.
I definitely don't condone him shooting an endangered species but I can sympathize with having to deal with loss from predators. I had an issue with hawks killing my chickens.
Saw one down here in Charleston a couple years ago near the waterfront, bout 100 feet or so away from us sitting on the deck of a bar. Really cool, and huge! Just be glad Haast's eagles aren't around anymore.
Jesus. The parody of 'Murrica practically writes itself with this case. lmao
