Rather than more heated arguing in a vacuum of knowledge, perhaps some additional reading is in order. Here is an article in the Duke Chronicle that investigates how the statue came to be a part of the chapel entrance and presents a thoughtful exploration of its meaning. Some of the comments following the article are also worth a read.
Our founding fathers were criminals. I am not ashamed of the American revolution. Are you ashamed of George Washington and co? Do you think we should have bowed to the demands of the king of England? Should we spit on their names and history because many of those founding fathers were slave owners?
I am not ashamed of the American revolution or George Washington. In the 86 years between our break from England and our civil war, most civilized nations progressed and learned to condemn and outlaw slavery.

I'm proud of America too, but I'm not about to paper over the dark side of our history, rather we should learn and progress from them.
Are you proud of the Dred Scott decision?!?
Are you proud of the slavers who tried to overthrow our government?!?
Are you proud of the genocide of our native Americans?!?
Are you proud of the lynching's during 20's?!?
Are you proud of our Jim crow laws?!?
Are you proud of the treatment of our Japanese citizens during WWII?!?
Etc, etc.
You may believe in America 'right or wrong', but most Americans know when to be proud and when to acknowledge and learn from our mistakes...
terrible decision, you dont get to erase history you dont like.
Your comment like many others on these numerous threads about removal of monuments demonstrate the problem with education in America (or maybe it's just a lack of basic common sense). History is NOT erased by the removal of symbols. There are no symbols of Nazis in Germany, yet everyone pretty much still knows the history. Children today and in the future will always learn of the treasonous and hateful history of the Confederacy by way of textbooks and the Internet.

The title speaks for itself but opine as you like or not.
I agree with the decision!
I suggest it be replaced with a bust of Lenin.
