I don't believe the police had mace either. Hopefully going forward, they will have some none lethal options when confronted with a person suffering from depression.

According to the cited article they carry pepper spray and the student was holding a multi-purpose tool with the knife blade unopened.

yanno what, I'm sick and dog dead tired of making excuses for criminals, putting police officers all over our country in harms way.

When cops go out on a call, they expect the worse, and are highly trained to do what is right and the right thing is to protect themselves.....period.

The kid was wrong....suffering from whatever, I don't care what he was suffering from....he attacked police with a knife, right? He wouldn't put it down...they had a right to shoot him....My Gosh, what has happened to this country???

We're being fed all this bull, to excuse criminal behavior....

No, it doesn't work like that, and shouldn't. Cops don't go to work in the morning thinking, "I'm going to go out and shoot someone today". People make is sound like cops enjoy shooting people, they don't.. They become highly upset and depressed b/c they have shot someone....

I swear, people who think they should do this or that, when in a life and death situation....they can't read the minds of the criminals, they don't know what they're intents are....and they need to protect themselves....

Bottom line is, the kid got himself shot, and now the cops that shot him, have to live with that....

and then you have these people that use this as an excuse to riot? What kind of mentality is that, that burns your city's cop cars? That was paid for by the town or cities, taxes....By God, to allow these people to get away with this, time after time, after time....?

Yes we do. He was no harm to anyone but himself.

He was standing with a knife -- they told him to drop it -- he didn't.

He was shot in the head. Why the head -- Five police officers surrounding one guy -- with a knife (so they thought) and they have to shoot him in the head.

That's not necessary -- even if he was a criminal. He wasn't a threat.

Why didn't they shoot him in the foot?

I think we do a disservice to our officers when we keep saying -- they are scared as an excuse.

We need to give them the proper tools to help deal with these situations. We honor them by shining blue lights but won't honor them by demanding that they be given better tools and training to deal with the high stress situations.

I would love to hear just one incident that ends with the knife wielder being shot in the leg. Mental illness should not be a death sentence. This cop should at the very least lose his job.

well, I'll tell you what, if you think, and believe it's so easy to be a police officer out there, then by all means, go sign up and do the testing and become a police officer.

Then when you shoot someone, in the head or otherwise, remember, how all people who have never been a police officer, "thinks" they can predict what a criminal is going to do.

When a police officer, encounters someone with a knife, who refuses to put it down, do they know the person wants to be shot?

No, they don't....

You people always think you know what you would do, or what should be done in a life or death situation.
Tell you what, why don't we put a gun in your hand, loaded, safety off, and put you in front of some random crazy with a knife, and over and over you state, drop the knife, but he doesn't....and keeps walking closer and closer to you. At that very moment in time, do you honestly think to yourself, where am I going to shoot him to stop him, and BTW, they were told the perp also had a gun....

there is a wave of crime going on, right now across the United States, that is simply uncanny....but the media doesn't report on this...do they?

The wave of crime happening in the U.S. right now, is alarming. Cops are briefed on this and told to be careful...be alert, and to do the right thing when they encounter a life and death situation. They are trained for it....highly trained. do they make mistakes, yes, they're human....

Why didn't they shoot the knife out of his hand? Why didn't one of the officers perform a Chuck Norris legendary round house kick and subdue him professionally? Oh yeah, because, life is not the same as a Hollywood movie.
