Why are so many youngish (under 40) conservatives avoiding the term conservative and embracing "classical liberal" (racist, support)

I've come across quite a few conservatives who avoid the label conservative and call themselves classical liberal, even though they are essentially conservatives who hold some social liberal views.
I specifically notice that this is common with libertarian types. When you examine their views you realize they are really no different than vast majority of conservatives, except they support gay marriage and pot smoking.
So the question is, why don't they just call themselves libertarians, or conservatives with social liberal views
Liberals have demonized conservatives as fascists, right wing nut jobs, bigots, racists, etc., etc. Conversely conservatives have demonized liberals as Marxist-Leninists, communists, left wing wackos, etc., etc. So it's understandable that liberals prefer the term "progressive" to "liberal". And that some conservatives would prefer "classical liberal" to "conservative". "Liberal" and "conservative" are perfectly good words that have been ruined by the more extreme elements of both the left and the right.

Why not call themselves classical conservatives?
I understand why they would avoid labels that have been demonized but it seems odd that they would choose a term that is the polar opposite.
But I also notice that this is almost exclusive with conservatives under 40
Now days: Conservative means you are a hateful white bigot
So why don't older conservatives use the label "classical liberal"
It seems like only the younger conservatives avoid the label conservative. Older ones don't have an issue with it. Many are actually proud of it.
