The EPA is a reactive agency, not a proactive one.

They regulate AFTER the damage has already been done.

There are standards that have been established for a number of chemicals by the EPA that are much lower than the numbers rigged up by Dourson when paid to do studies on them so as to get them passed as "safe"
During the hearing he repeatedly refused to commit to upholding those lower numbers or recuse himself when any of the chemicals he pimped for are involved.

Trump and EPA rolling back environmental regulations

I hope that when enough EPA regs are rolled back someone opens a lovely toxic waste dump a short distance upwind of Mar-A-Lago, poetic justice at its finest.

I agree.

The thing is that of course in real life, toxic industrial plants and toxic waste dumps, are almost always located next to low-income areas. There is an entire division of the EPA called the EPA civil rights division that is tasked with regulating companies that freely pollute and poison low-income areas. Pruitt is hell-bent on eliminating or weakening this division. of the EPA.

"The new leadership at the Environmental Protection Agency, has proposed eliminating its environmental justice program, which addresses pollution that poses health threats specifically concentrated in minority communities. The program, in part, offers money and technical help to residents who are confronted with local hazards such as leaking oil tanks or emissions from chemical plants."

Reduce America's access to healthcare. But make sure more people are sick from poisoned air and water! Thanks GOP voters!

Of course this administration is busy undermining the civil rights divisions in all their other departments too , like Labor, Education, even Justice. Civil rights? who needs 'em right?

Trump rolled back EPA regulations. OK. That's what he said he would do.

So have we heard the last of "Trump hasn't done anything" posts and "he never fulfills promises" posts?

Liberals assume that if a regulation exists that it is needed and effective.

Who can trust big business to do the right thing and dispose of their toxic wastes response ably? Wait until they fowl the air and water then they will blame Democrats for spending the money to clean it up.

How is de-regulating environmental protections good for the American people? How is adding MORE mercury into the nation's water sources a needed thing? What is the case for increasing the amount of poisons that big oil companies emit into the environment? What is the benefit of destroying the nation's National Parks and Monuments? Is everything in this country to be sacrificed for the benefit of one industry? Who benefits from that?

There was, to be honest, some low-hanging fruit in the early 1970's. Los Angeles was gagging on smog. But I agree there's been no balancing of costs and benefits. They have promoted spurious agendas such as "global warming."
