The fact that you guys would murder somebody rather than handing in a gun is preposterous. If the gun owners on this board are representative of the "good guy with a gun" theory, there isn't such a thing - - just a bunch of hotheads looking for their moment to kill a person. Good God.
Take what you said above and apply it to any non-government agent trying to disarm you. Is it still something you stand by, or does everything change when it's the government doing it?
The government is not the good guy. I don't care if it's your average person or if they call themselves part of the government...if they try to take your property, especially your best means of defense, you have every right to stop them. It isn't murder. They're the ones at fault.
That's a major question that needs to be asked. If they use some judicial fiat or executive order in the future to pretty much gut the 2nd Amendment, how many will hand it over when they come to collect it and how many will "give them the bullets first" when they come for the guns?
If it ever comes down to it, I'll just hand my guns over. Keeping my guns is an extremely low priority to me - certainly not enough to engage in a battle with the authorities that I am certain to lose.
Even if it's unlikely, I don't like how quickly people dismiss the idea. Things can change quickly, and it can definitely happen here. The U.S. is not immune.
The government will not come to our houses to confiscate AR-15s. They won't have to. The owners won't be able to take them anywhere to shoot them without being stopped and arrested for carrying illegal weapons. What good will they be? Rifle ranges won't accept them. Local rod and gun clubs won't let you shoot them on their range. Unless you have acres of private woods where the neighbors can't hear you firing off your AR-15, where are you going to go to play with them? They will be useless AND illegal.
And once the government rids the good guys of their weapons, the bad guys win.
Just like no one can buy pot or smoke pot just because the federal government made it illegal? Several states say it's legal and no one is arrested for doing it. Some states have the same attitude towards firearms.
The gun lobby wants you to have shootouts. Wonder why they never point to guns as the problem but everything else? So they could get governments, normal "good" citizens to buy guns and ammo to "protect" themselves.
The only one who's winning is the gun lobby at the expense of people's lives being shot by deranged individuals.
Spoken like a true terrified liberal. And so wrong as well.
