All In The Family was the first show to actually have toilet sounds or any bathroom references to be allowed by the censors. Now there's no censors or rules...

If you really want a glimpse of life of yesteryear, some old newspapers capture both the best and worst of society.

You'll find that some things haven't really changed.
Yep! Because even behind beautifully done movies like Wizard of Oz, the sweet child star back then still died of a drug overdose 30 years later, just like today's youth is doing. Nothing has changed, just back then it was more easier to sweep the ugliness under a rug.

How can I speak through anything but my own personal lens? Some may have had a great time as a child but I was raised by a self obsessed drunk that treated me like a slave. Then there was boating on the Mekong. That did not help my attitude one bit. I spent 45 years working to get to the point I did not have to work for anyone else.

I am finally living on a well earned pension and enjoying not having to work for anyone. It ain't luxury but it ain't bad.

Old TV: Remember the Western called "Have gun, will travel" that built the show around a corrupt Sherriff, a madam and a frequently drunk psychotic gunslinger. I always wondered why no one else noticed. that show was far more illustrative of the West than "The Honeymooners" was of working urban life.

Rush Limbaugh and his endless promotion of hate thy neighbor.

I'm not a Limbaugh fan, but just out of curiosity....why do you care what Rush Limbaugh does?

IIRC, you've been living in Canada since the 70s. Do you feel that what Rush Limbaugh does influences life in Canada?

Hollywood has always been rough on those working in it. My old aunt used to collect those gossip mags all about Hollywood scandals. This is not particularly reflective of middle class life post WWII life. Hollywood is still the worst, as we are being reminded. Yet we continue to consume what they produce.

The Wizard of Oz is an amazing classic movie. And we will continue to enjoy it.

There is some truth to 'hate radio'.

That said, my 22 year old son (a writer), is obsessed with looking through my parents old photos. He loves how dressed up they were (my father a WWII vet - both deceased). And how fancy they looked in their black and white photos. My Dad in his military finest and my Mom looking like a movie star in her heels and fancy coat.

And these aren't 'special day' photos like Christmas, etc. It's just how people dressed.

Now ~ my son certainly doesn't dress like that and my Fortune 500 company has recently gone to jeans every day ~ but it does serve to point out that people did care about their appearance and appropriate dress.

I have no desire to turn back the clock but people did seem to take my pride in themselves.

Have you never seen pre-code movies - full of sexual innuendo and violence.

Movies are not real life. Real life back then was not to different from life today, you just didn't have all the intense social media. People might have dressed up and had manners in public but in private women and children were still beaten, people took drugs, engaged in risky sexual behavior, etc.
