Pffffttt..... How convenient for Starbucks! Chicago has the same sugary drinks tax and I don't think Starbucks is included either. Chicagoans don't look any thinner, however, so they must be paying more to get their sugar fix.
I think that should be a law everywhere. It would mean companies cannot underpay someone who was previously underemployed. Employees should be paid based on what doing the job is worth, not how desperate an individual may be.
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
As we say goodbye to 2017, we will say hello to some new laws. All across the country, hundreds of laws will go into effect January 1, 2018. Here are some of the laws impacting Tennessee:
because we cant govern ourselves.
Quote:
A new free speech law allows students at institutions of higher education to speak about, write about and discuss any topic so long as they do not violate the First Amendment. The bill also forbids these institutions from disinviting speakers on the basis that their presence may be met with criticism or controversy
because college administrators dont know what is best for their own campuses.
Quote:
Barbers can now make home visits to customers who are not ill. Previously, only sick customers could have barbers visit their homes. In order to make a home visit, the barber must have a residential barber certificate.
because barbers and their customers couldnt be trusted to work out their own arraignments.
Quote:
School bus drivers must now be 25 years old or older (Current drivers younger than 25 will be grandfathered in) and they must complete a training program before they are allowed to transport students.
because school adminstrators and the insurance carriers couldnt figure it out themselves.
Thank god for laws, how would we get theough the day!
Forget what you've heard about Chicago and IL - we have people working for us and working on the things that are important, as witnessed by these new laws for 2018:
Our courts will now consider a pets well-being during divorce proceedings to determine who gets Tweedle, Lassie, or Meow Tse Tuna. The court can mandate joint or sole custody of a pet. (This is only in cases where the couple cannot come to agreement and service animals are exempt.)
Public and charter schools will no longer be allowed to simply expel Pre-K students. Schools will have to find programs and services to help the violent little tykes resolve their problems instead of just kicking them out. (Wheewww....that's a relief. I was afraid the poor parents would be tasked with this!)
Public and charter schools must now provide reasonable breast-feeding accommodations for their students. (No clarification on whether this means Mom can go into a kindergardner's class to remove little Tiffany so she can breastfeed her, or if this means high school sophomores can have someone drop off their baby so the student can breastfeed him - or if the sophomore just brings the baby to school. It's all very confusing.)
August 4th, in addition to being Obama's bday is now Barack Obama Day in Illinois. (No info about parades or a day off from work.)
Individuals may now change their gender designation on their birth certificate even if they haven't had surgery to undergo gender transition. (No suggestion on how LEO's will pursue an offender who was described as one gender, but whose record shows another gender.)
Corn is now the official state grain of IL!
Cycling is now the official state exercise!!
Creates the Student Worker Opportunity Act. When a state agency has a job opening for an intern or student worker, that agency must notify DHS, DCFS and the IDJJ (IL Department of Juvenile Justice) who must then notify qualified applicants. (Thus ensuring a foot in the door for minorities where all state government jobs are concerned.)
Do any of you have any new state laws allowing you to sleep better at night?
Here in Tn:
because we cant govern ourselves.
because college administrators dont know what is best for their own campuses.
because barbers and their customers couldnt be trusted to work out their own arraignments.
because school adminstrators and the insurance carriers couldnt figure it out themselves.

Frank, if we were bright enough to make our own decisions we wouldn't let these idiots waste their time on nonsense like this.
Chicago has more than 200 new laws, and Texas has 26. I guess that’s the benefit of having a part time legislature (they only meet in odd numbered years unless the governor calls a special session.

Katygirl, I wish ours would meet once every four years. They would do less damage that way.
In Wisconsin, they have raised the fees to state parks and camping fees there. Also, they raised registration fees for hybrids and electric cars.
If that's the oddest one passed this year, it's not bad. WI doesn't seem as corrupt as IL, however.
A little known secret - state and federal parks offer discounts for seniors and some allow you to take it at age 50 or 55. Others at 60.
So when you get to be older than dirt, as I am, there will be a benefit you can look forward to!
