And the Daily Caller isn't even trying to hide the fact that they oppose this for political reasons.

Once these people have paid their debt to society, their right to vote should be restored. They way that they may or may not choose to vote should be irrelevant.

Sorry, I'm with Florida on this one.

The way things are now, every sentence is effectively a life sentence.

When someone gets a life sentence for shoplifting at 18, it's hard to claim that we're being true to the Constitution.

Take the truly dangerous violent criminals off the streets for good. For the rest, have them serve a reasonable sentence, and then let them build their life unimpeded. That means sealing their records and restoring their Constitutional rights.

I'm a Libertarian, so while I hate that the left are doing this strictly for the votes... it's the right thing to do.

I'd prefer that it be anyone convicted of a non-violent crime should get the right restored.

Not sure we should trust murderers and rapists to vote their conscience.

Also, someone said to change a bad law keep enforcing it. I'd also put out that adding tens of thousands of uninformed voters with criminal tendencies might create an explosion of REALLY BAD laws.

Progressive-ism is not socialism. Often they are fully unrelated.

"Left-wing blog Think Progress, which first reported that the petition had garnered enough signatures, noted that “research shows that people with criminal convictions tend to vote for Democratic candidates.”

What a great future we are heading for . The dems did this with felons in virginia and its blue now with tons of immigrants voting around the dc suburbs.

Besides felons they are hoping hundreds of thousands of puerto ricans pouring into florida will vote democrat so we may be heading for a third world future.

Have you ever noted so many of these so called progressive cities are some of the most segregated and have income disparity along the lines of sub saharan Africa and Latin America. Public schools in most liberal cities have been abandoned by whites ( Its about 12% white kids in San Francisco and LA public schools, around the same for NYC, Boston, Chicago, DC etc)

Most liberal college towns are lily white

Hopefully when we achieve this third world future for America so hoped for by the democrats , the libs and democrats will try and live in it

I think a person convicted of a felony that has served their time and kept their record clean for a set number of years should be able to vote and have their record removed for non-violent charges. This would perhaps motivate them to integrate back into society, get jobs and start paying taxes. Voting will give them a vested interest in the future of the country. The permanent approach we have now ends up making it difficult for those people to get jobs and we end up having to support them. How is that good for the rest of the country??? We end up banning them for life then supporting them for life? Makes no sense. Once again, if states choose to do this, the GOP should fully support it - states rights - remember?

There is nothing in the Constitution or Bill of Rights that gives government the power to permanently strip free citizens of their rights.
Strangely though, alot of people seem to agree when law enforcement or Govt does do this, heck, Ive seen threads where many people suggest tougher laws for ex convicts, especially for sex offenses. Its like they have completely forgotten this is the US legal system and to punish for life goes against everything the US system was designed to be!!

I dont get it?! how have they allowed themselves to become so brainwashed?

The proposed change would not restore the right to those convicted of murder or sexual assault.

Why does the right always side with less people being able to vote?

Actually, most of us were hoping that Puerto Rico would receive the help it needed to restore infrastructure after the hurricane, and I suspect that is what most Puerto Ricans would have preferred, as well.
