Let's say I was stopped for having a broken tail light and there were two policemen roaming around. One of them had a crew cut, eye liner, earrings, small hips, a man's voice, no lipstick and no visible breasts. I had no idea if it was a man or woman. I became curious.
Let's say I said to him or her, "excuse me but I have a question. I like you and I appreciate all the hard work, lots of it quite dangerous, that you're doing for our county and I applaud you for it. But I have an odd question but I don't wish to ask you if it will make you angry , hurt or uncomfortable . Do you want me to ask you ? Or do you want to just let me go? "
He or she might say, "no; that's fine . Go ahead and ask me." So I would say, "alright, then. I apologize if you take this wrong but are you a male or female?"
What do you think would happen to me, if anything?

The cop would probably scream at you that they're not there to answer your questions.

1. Law enforcement officers don't "roam around"
2. Most of them wear a uniform which means their appearance is "uniform". You won't find a male cop wearing eyeliner or earrings. You'd be hard pressed to find a female cop wearing eyeliner or earrings. Both genders wear ballistic vests. You won't see breasts.
3. Your post is weird.

You just said there were two policemen roaming around, so why would you need to ask their gender?
Of course, I realize it was a slip of the tongue (or finger, in this case) but it's an odd and somewhat creepy question. Did you do this?
