The Supreme Court has been pretty clear about this since 2010. There can be no significant restrictions on gun ownership without repealing the 2nd amendment.

Miller’s holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those “in common use at the time” finds support in the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons." Pp. 54–56.
US Supreme Court Case McDonald v. Chicago (if this is where the 2010 date is coming from) determined that it was unconstitutional for a city (in this case Chicago) to impose an outright ban on the possession of handguns within its jurisdictional limits, while someone could go to the next town over and not be subjected to that restriction.
