Likely the reason why Baltimore has a 3.2% income rate in additional to high property taxes.

https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sal...59_rect/10_zm/

Looks like the property tax on a $266,000 valued house would be around $6,200.

If the people who reside in Baltimore like 3.2% local income tax rates and very high property taxes for a city that has many parts that look like the third-world then good for them.

The Baltimore city income tax alone is a higher income tax rate than many states. There are many states that have neither a state income or local income tax. Local income taxes are almost unheard of in western states.

It is likely the reason why the city population is declining and neighborhoods are boarded-up.

I do think that police should make six-figures in cities like Baltimore though.

The same reason some firefighters prefer to work the big cities vs. small communities; for the excitement and action.

This, and suburban police jobs are cush and highly sought after. You have to pay your dues first.

A lot of suburban police departments also require a college degree to be hired. I think big cities are more lenient.

It seems like the people running the Phoenix Police refuse to admit that it is likely much easier to be a police officer in Gilbert, Chandler, Fountain Hills or Surprise than Phoenix.

Chief Williams should admit that her police have to work more and for likely less money than wealthier suburbs like Gilbert and Fountain Hills.

I would venture to guess that the average police officer likely deals with more negative interactions per day in Phoenix than in one year in a rich, non-welfare class suburb like Gilbert or Fountain Hills.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/02/02/wher...-shortage.html

Same with Houston, why would any police officer want to go from call to call when they likely have many suburbs that they can earn more money and not have to deal with all the issues brought on by the welfare state.

Hopefully, those who want to be future police officers are smart and choose rich, crime-free suburbs over welfare and poverty class big cities.

Answer: Money.

It's a dangerous profession that deals with the dregs of our society. If cities don't pay enough, then people won't apply to become a police officers. Take a look at AR. They have a serious problem with not enough teachers, because the pay is poor, conditions are bad, and no respect. If cops had poor pay, dangerous environment, and no respect, then there would be serious problem of recruiting police officers like the teacher problem. The high salary makes it worth while for these police officers to put up with the other negative aspects of the job.

Starting yearly salary for Baltimore Police Officers is $48,971.00. Top officers can earn up to $83,881.00. Retirement - Pension after 25 years of service is 60% of sworn member's salary.

doesn't sound that great to me.

At last count there about 700,000 LEO in the US, working for about 18,000 law enforcement agencies.

Some small town Police services pay as little as $12 an hour. Police officers talk to each other about which agencies have better wages and benefits. Many Police services in the US require officers to buy ALL of their own equipment including uniforms and weapons , with their own money. Some of the State police services, like KY are seriously short staffed by amounts nearing 500 officers. Georgia has a chronic shortage of State police officers. So does Arizona.

County Sheriff departments in many states are poorly paid, and offer few benefits to the officers.

Big city Police departments have the tax base to be able to offer better wages, and better benefits. The negative aspect is the work load is much higher, and the officers are running from one serious call to another, for the entire shift.

In some cases, the dispatch centre is so backed up that lower priority calls are left unanswered for hours, or the caller is told.......come to the station and we will take a report. The cars on the road can't do a common theft call, or a shoplifter because they are doing more serious responses. More serious as in armed robberies, sexual assaults, car accidents and home invasions.

If you want better Police service you are going to have to pay your officers better. Or they will leave for a better set of benefits, someplace else. Many officers who started out in a north east State, are now working in the south/ south west, or on the west coast. Better pay and benefits, and better weather, too.

XX.

Well I don’t know about Phoenix as well but in Houston because of the way things work HPD covers large amounts of suburbs too, also not only due you get payed more, your job is likely more important. NYPD seems to be the coolest PD in the world.

Some of the cops in Chicago shouldn't be cops but they have connections. No suburb would ever hire them.
