If it works, it will literally eliminate poverty in this country, but....

-------------------------------------

Entrepreneur Andrew Yang has a big goal for a relatively unknown business person: to reach the White House. And he's aiming to get there by selling America on the idea that all citizens, ages 18-64, should get a check for $1,000 every month, no strings attached, from the U.S. government.

Yang, 43, who was born in upstate New York in 1975, will be running as a Democrat, according to his campaign website.

No one has quoted Thatcher yet?

("The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money").

I also chuckle at the "no strings attached" bit.

The one major thing I know is "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch."

Once automation really takes off and makes humans redundant for anything other than consumption, UBI will be a necessity to prevent serious political and societal instability.

Best to have a system ready before automation engulfs most people's jobs, or it won't be pretty for the time it takes to scramble for one after the fact.

I don't think humanity is at the point where we need to start actually offering UBI, but future plans and budgets should make room for it.

And in related news, the cost of living will go up by $1000/person/month.

Your move, Wang.

Inflation will occur, but the inflation will narrow the gap between the poor and middle class, for the most part.

And if we keep importing goods from China and other low-cost countries, inflation will be constrained.

For teachers, I'm sure you have seen online tutorials, videos etc.

For doctors, my friends are working on using programs to identify cancers from medical imaging. A lot of diagnosing programs have been developed too. It takes time for them to mature and go through the legal processes.

Yes and of course I know about robots going in for police and the military. And I know about robotic assisted surgery.

But many of these professions rely on human compassion and interaction that I doubt a robot could ever replicate.
