This is a new action taken against families that might have been allowable before but other presidents decided it was too heinous.
This is the kind of reasoning where people say - "hey you're guilty of jay walking so if you're killed while in custody, you knew the risks!". Obviously there are a lot of sadists in these roles who relish the opportunity as an excuse to go as extreme as allowed - in an almost gleeful way.
And that's the same feeling on this. We as a country are responsible for enforcing in a REASONABLE way. We're looking more and more like a fascist totalitarian state taking plays out of their playbook instead of one for democracies. Careful, someone just might be coming for you next on some "trump-ed" up charge that gives the excuse for you to be treated in the same manner.

I agree, he was feeling the heat from all side on this one, even from world leaders. It's going to be interesting to watch Sarah Huckabee Sanders put her spin on the quick reversal, after days of tough talking. But, they were probably more worried about the November elections than those kids.
Criminal??? Firstly wouldn't one have to be tried and convicted of a crime before being separated from their children in the U.K. or any of the other countries calling themselves civilized?

To anyone who says or thinks that the kids being detained are, in so many words, better off than they have ever been before in their lives, I can tell you that you are just WRONG. Material possessions cannot make up for the loss of a parent in the child's eyes, even in cases where it is for the safety and the so-called good of the child. The trauma that occurs to a child who is old enough to know what is happening but not old enough to understand is a trauma that is lifelong.
At the same time, being in the company of one's parents cannot make up for malnourishment and infection.
