The two terms are often conflated and used interchangeably, often with leftists in the US pointing to 'socialism' in Europe as a model they wish to follow.
I seem to recall "socialism" being used by the right very frequently to describe Europe and any semblance of a welfare state in America. Are they wrong? Or perhaps "leftists"?
Interesting. So when the Soviet dictatorship claimed they were socialist to appeal to workers, they were lying as part of their propaganda? Or do you believe that workers actually had a say?
Give me a link or quote, and I'll respond. I'm done responding to your made-up dialogue.

You need a link to know that the Soviet Union called itself socialist? Do you believe it was part of the dictatorship propaganda to appeal to workers? Or do you believe that workers actually had a say?
The EU is not a country. They have more than 30 different languages and no common fiscal policy. You cant come up with a single country that has some parts of the country offering a proper public safety net and other parts offering nothing.
You are just looking for excuses not to do what you claim you want. You can't come up with a state in the USA that isn't offering a safety net program like SS or unemployment etc..........
All talk no action. Situation normal.

What? These are federal programs. Not state programs. I absolutely do not want states to create a public safety net while we continue free movement of people within the US. That's madness. No country has ever done that. Its either federal or nothing.

Many across the spectrum are confused as to what socialism is. I gave the correct definition in my post. If some on the right call welfare state programs financed through taxation 'socialism', then they are wrong, just as those on the left who call such things socialism are wrong.
I truly hope that this new breed calling themselves socialists mean it in the sense of a more developed welfare state and safety net, and not the system under which the former Soviet Union or the present day North Korea operates, which is what socialism is.
It's a matter of semantics really, but as long as they mean the former and not the latter, then they are not that big of a threat.

So you actually believe the North Korean propaganda machine? The dictator calls itself "Socialist and Democratic People's Republic of North Korea". A dictator can just own everything and call it socialist and democratic and you buy into it?

It is a truly socialist state, where by the state owns everything. If that is what you or others advocate for, then call yourselves socialist. If you, on the other hand, are calling for things such as Medicare For All, mandating PTO or maternity leave in statute, etc, then that is part of the welfare state.
In many cases today, European parties retain the word 'socialist' such as 'Democratic Socialist', but they have long given up on socialism, understanding that the free market under liberal Democracy works, with a well developed welfare state is best to achieve their goals. Britain's Labour party eliminated its Clause IV calling for state ownership of the means of production in 1995 to become more modern and be able to compete in elections.

So you actually believe the North Korean propaganda? It doesnt matter that the workers are literal slaves of a ruling all-powerful king? The workers actually own the means of production in North Korea and have a say?
Thats hilarious.
