Remember that religious doctrine of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you?" If you were a homosexual, would you like this sort of treatment?
"The court said two of Whatcott’s hand-delivered leaflets had “hallmarks” of hatred, targeting gays as a menace that could threaten the safety and well-being of others, referring to respected sources like the Bible to lend credibility, and using “vilifying and derogatory representations to create a tone of hatred.”

“It delegitimizes homosexuals by referring to them as filthy or dirty sex addicts and by comparing them to pedophiles, a traditionally reviled group in society,” wrote Rothstein.

The court said the law’s purpose is to “prevent discrimination by curtailing certain types of public expression” but it is tailored, and does not ban private expression of views.

While acknowledging it is a limit on free speech and expressions of religious belief, the court said it struck “an appropriate balance” with other Charter values, namely “a commitment to equality and respect for group identity and the inherent dignity owed to all human beings.”

I highly doubt a liberal Canadian court would bring charges against a Muslim who stated the Islamic beliefs of gender inequality, the wife as property, the supported for arranged marriage and the hatred of Jews/Israel.
You can doubt all you like but this man was not simply stating his sincere religious beliefs but counselling hatred and he's done it before.

I'm more than sure that not having been there to witness personally, the bar is set so high for prosecution of this law that he wasn't just passing out benign literature and espousing his belief that homosexuals are simply sinners. My bet is; before any police force would petition for a warrant of arrest they'd have a fair certainty he crossed the line between espousing personal beliefs and counselling hatred towards his target of bigotry.

What is it about the difference people find difficult to understand?

I'm sorry, but if you want an excuse to hate, look elsewhere. Jesus expressed love and forgiveness for those you'd likely write off as hellworthy sinners, such as prostitutes.

Matthew 15
[10] And he [Jesus] called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
[11] Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

[18] But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
[19] For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
[20] These are the things which defile a man:
How is this hate speech? If anything, he's telling people to not say or do malicious things to each other.

He made it quite clear there in #11 that what goes *inside* a man's mouth is none of His concern.

I am fully aware of what the perverts on the court said, but it changes nothing as they represent the age of the revived Sodom and Gomorrah that Jesus said would happen.

Jesus did indeed express love, but not in the manner that you envision love. This generation presents a feigned love. Jesus' genuine love lets hellworthy sinners and prostitutes know that they must turn from their evil deeds but your feigned love encourages their hellworthy behavior to continue because you engage in the same deeds yourself.

@HumpDay
A difference in cultures?
US:First amendment
CAN: Hate speech tramples on the constitutional rights of its target.
A conundrum for sure.

Oh no. Bringing religion into this is not helpful.
