In 1776, the oppressive Big Govt was the British government, which at that time kept imposing greater and greater regulations and restrictions on the people of the colonies, charging taxes that the people had no say in, taking away their guns, sending govt officials (soldiers) to enforce draconian conditions, etc.
Not much different from what liberal governments have been doing for the last few decades in the same continent.
Many such liberals have been speaking against those who celebrate with "patriotism" etc., though it's clear they don't just resent people waving flags, waving sparklers. Taxes exceed anything even the British ever imagined on their American subjects. The number of unelected government agencies forcing regulations on us, a prime cause for concern in the Declaration of Independence, has similarly soared beyond all recognition. The number of regulations and restrictions against personally-owned guns, similarly exceed anything the British could have hoped for... the only other major difference being that the British govt didn't have a ban forbidding such govt action in place while they did it.
While the United States has strong protections in place for religious freedom, the liberals have been chipping away at them for decades, trying to pretend that that very religious freedom is somehow "oppressive"... which the Supreme Court has only recently been acting against. Prohibitions against the central government usurping the powers of smaller (state, local) governments have long been ignored as the Fed govt has taken over everything from workplace conditions to wages to light bulbs to usage of private property.
The colonists of the time called out clearly their objections:

The whole purpose of government, is to protect our rights. Not to provide us retirement, medical insurance, high wages, or low-flow toilets. And when it stops protecting our rights, and instead abuses and violates them, it's our duty to change it or abolish it.
This throwing off of such government, was the whole purpose of electing people like Donald Trump: Bringing in a new Sheriff to fight fire with fire against the government which has been doing those things. Naturally, the people who support those government takeovers, have been railing against Trump, trying to pretend HE is the one doing bad things, not them. Their exaggerations, flat lies and smears have gone over the edge from hysterical to outright insanity.
And yet the people who elected him keep expanding their ranks, despite the long propaganda campaign waged against him (and them) by the supposedly-nonpartisan media. Now they are causing and encouraging outright violence against the govt officials carrying out the housecleaning of agendas such as the liberals' own, as their criminals activities are identified and prosecuted.
The re-establishing of freedom may become as long and bloody as the first one was in 1776. And the activites of those fighting for it, are certain to be as vilified, lied about, and retaliated for, as any carried out by the colonists in Washington's, Jefferson's, and Adams' times.

Ah yes, those who continue seeking to institute government control of peoples' medical decisions and continue to grow an already bloated military budget as if that's not part of the government also continue attempting to perpetrate the myth they favor less government.
Visiting my patch in the community garden yesterday, a fellow gardener asked me what I was doing on Blow-things-up Day. I think it's weird that people think the way to show your love for your country is to wave a bigger piece of cloth than your neighbor is waving and waste a lot of money on gunpowder. That it isn't how I demonstrate my love for my family or friends, why would I do it for my fellow citizens?

Unlike bloated socialist welfare programs, having a military is in the constitution.
