That reporter was too dumb to understand that were are not a democracy. So the rest is not important.

It's an Opinion Piece. Most high profile papers print all sorts of Opinion pieces, including conflicting opinions.

Prior to the election, Trump called the Electoral College a rigged system. This sentiment is shared by many on all sides of the political spectrum.

Had Trump won the popular vote and lost the College ( as he expected to do) he would be first in line the Constitution needed to be rewritten to enable a democratic election process.

The NYT thinks no such thing. The opinion piece they published is written by people who think that the constitution could/should be amended to allow for more direct democracy.
