Means about as much to me as Chelsea Clinton's "deep thoughts" she fires off on Twitter every week.

The difference Patti misses is that in the era of Sam Donaldson, and Helen Thomas, the reporters were not obvious partisan activists. They were journalists, with some degree of integrity. That is not the case today.

As far as the second paragraph lamenting the lack of civil discourse, the author is only trying to hold one side accountable. Yes, Trump is brash, and say a lot of stupid, insulting things. However, remember the outrage when a Congressman dared say "You lie" to Obama? Now, elected officials scream F-bombs at the president. Hope the Democrats are okay with yet another precedent they've set the next time there is a Dem POTUS.

The last paragraph is nothing more than pearl clutching hyperbole. If CNN doesn't want to get criticized, maybe they should try to resurrect some shred of journalistic integrity. They are so clearly biased, they honestly make Fox News look fair and balanced by comparison.

Not to mention that whatever your politics, Reagan was a very classy individual.

Can the same be said about Donald Trump?

I'm pretty sure Reagan would not say he would date his daughter if she wasn't his daughter. Or call STDs his own personal Vietnam. etc.

I’ve tried to imagine what my father would have done if people attending a political speech of his had turned to the press and raised their middle fingers, hurled obscenities or physically menaced the reporters who were there doing their jobs. I found it difficult to conjure the image, and then I realized why. It simply wouldn’t have happened. The person on the podium, the person everyone has gathered to see, sets the tone.

Those of us who are horrified by the vilification of the news media, those of us who cringe at the sight of angry mobs jeering at the cordoned-off journalists at Trump rallies, far outnumber those who are swept up by this ugly passion. We are still in the majority. But if we are silent, if we don’t speak up, if we don’t raise our voices and say, “This is not America,” it won’t matter that we are in the majority. Silence didn’t create this country; brazen, unwavering commitment did. And one of those commitments was to a free press — one not controlled or hampered by a demagogue who has a good day only when he’s being flattered.
My father, Ronald Reagan, would never have stood for this

Well said!
Reagan gave Americans the middle finger by not keeping his word. Oh but he was polite as he shafted we the people so that's better?

I got one better. George Washington would not approve of what the Federal Government as a whole has turned into.

Oh stop, now you are mad because I called you on your discussion of conservatism versus the topic at hand. You did nothing to place them on a more level playing field. Conservatism has nothing to do with the conversation at all.

It is an article about how one revered republican handled the media versus another "revered" republican. Reagan's daughter is trying to make a point to cult supporters who once loved everything about her father.

The media created him and now they are upset that they can't control him.
