It appears that Nancy Pelosi may not have enough support among her own caucus to be elected as the next Speaker of the House. While she can certainly win a majority of Democrats, she also needs to win a majority of the House in order to win.

As it stands, the Democrats are expected to hold a margin of about 235-200 over the Republicans. If so, she can only have about 15 Democrats fail to support her in the House vote, or she would not be elected.

According to the Huffington Post, there are more than 20 Democrats who are ready to publish a letter pledging not to vote for Pelosi as the next Speaker of the House. They believe that some newer, possibly younger leadership is needed.

Quote:
Nancy Pelosi’s Democratic Foes Think They Have The Votes To Block Her

Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) told reporters Tuesday night that he was “100 percent” confident there were enough votes to block Pelosi ― more than 20 ― during a speaker floor vote. He said the anti-Pelosi members planned to release a letter demonstrating to Pelosi that she doesn’t have the votes, at which point they expect other Democrats to step up and run for the speaker position.

To be speaker, a Democrat would have to win that election among just Democrats in November, but he or she would also have to win an election among the full House on Jan. 3. If current projections hold, Democrats look like they’ll have a majority of 233 to 235 members out of 435 total, meaning Pelosi could lose 15 to 17 votes and still be elected speaker.

This matter is further complicated by the fact that nobody appears to currently be running against Pelosi. The strategy appears to be to make it clear that she cannot win, and then some new leaders will stand forward to replace her.

Of course the Democrats prefer a centrally controlled agenda and this sort of "grass roots" style leadership is considered distasteful by the Democrat party elites. This is not how this is supposed to work, in their view. Stay tuned, this could be interesting.

LOL at "grass roots"

What exactly do you mean there ?

Of all the people Seth Moulton has on his list, he may be the only one who wasnt supported by the DCCC.

From the bottom up, rather than the top down.

There should have been a "I certainly hope not!" choice, but there isn't, so I voted "NO".
Honestly, my sentiment is "I hope not, but I just don't know how it will end up."

The Democrat House is going to turn into an alligator pit and turn on each other. This is going to be comedy gold.

sure keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel good.

meanwhile the Dems have stayed together vastly better than the republicans who did not manage to pass any policy other than a huge tax cut for billionaires....

so keep telling yourselves the dems can't govern it will give you something to feel good about while they are being sworn in.

Nancy has a stellar record for keeping the party inline. and while the dems may well pick a new speaker, they are much more likely to wait until it serves the party better. Let Nancy deal with the orange fatman, and when the time comes we will have fresh face that FOX has not managed to demonize slowly and steadily like they normally do...

She has to get 218 votes in the House to get the job. It appears that the Democrats will have about 235 seats when all the races are decided. 235 - 218 = 17 Democrat votes that she can lose and still get elected to this position.

However, if the Huffington Post article is correct, there are more than 20 Democrats who are committed to not voting for her. If that is right, Nancy Pelosi will not be the next speaker of the House. It will be someone else. I will not venture to guess who, other than it will be a Democrat in Congress.
