Macy’s product images for its holiday pajamas feature a number of families decked out in festive gear, but some on social media are calling one photo in particular racist.
The collected images shared on social media depict a white couple with children twice, an interracial LGBTQ couple with biracial children, and a black mother with three black children. Naturally, social media users — in particular, a Cincinnati city councilman, Jeff Pastor — wondered why the family that did not feature a father was black.
There are people with a weird mindset who actually look for things to be offended by. It makes their day. They put a lot of energy into it. Too bad they don't focus on something positive instead of this nonsense. I could find dozens of things to be offended by if I tried - but I don't. I have better things to do with my time. This whole thing is completely out of hand.
I glanced at the photos, different styles of families, so what? But Macy’s should have been paying extra attention, in this age of PC craziness, they need to be extremely careful in how they portray people of color and sexual orientation. There are just too many ready to take offense and as retailers who want business, it’s important for them not to be tone deaf. Not saying I agree with the craziness, but it’s the way things are now. Retailers gotta do what they need to.

Isn't one of the gay male fathers black? Does he not count?
The next evening, Macy’s issued a more extended apology, tweeting, “Thank you for reaching out to share feedback on our holiday pajama product images. We apologize. Our intent was never to offend. It’s important for us to know when we’ve missed the mark, and we appreciate that our customers let us know. Additionally, if you saw a collection of images on social media, please know that those were actually product images that were cut and pasted together rather than an advertisement from Macy’s. We know we are at our best when what we do fully reflects the rich diversity of our colleagues, customers & communities. We have shared the comments with our team & are making changes so our customers see balanced images when shopping online with us.”
Balanced images. The ad features 7 white people, 6 black people, including a black/white gay couple, and 2 dogs. I demand that they include at least 1 cat!

Why does it bother you that people are offended and that Macy's responded? That ad was put out for the public to see and react to it. Macy's doesn't get to choose the reaction otherwise we would all be shopping in their store.

And why are the dogs pictured only with white people? Macy's is perpetuating the myth that black people don't like dogs!
