The US spends over $150 billion / year on overseas military bases. How about closing ALL of them and posting American troops on the US border? I'm sure they would be far happier actually defending our country than any other country.
government workers love these shut downs, they don't have to come to work, and get paid without using their leave
I use to work for the feds, still know a few that do, and not a single one I have ever encountered liked a gov shutdown. Most are indifferent, but have not encountered anyone that was enthusiastic about it.
It is actually a PITA for a lot of workers, if need a day off, easier just to take leave.

Or, just send the Seabees, the Army Combat Engineers, and the Air Force Red Horse Squadrons to the border and let them go to work. The wall would be built on time and under budget! The military units could be allowed to hire civilian workers to flesh out their work force.
