True but that does not fit the agenda!

This is a good thing. Obviously if you're handicapped or elderly, this doesn't apply to you.

But 20-somethings who are able to work but purposely trying to abuse the system need to be called on it. Glad to hear this law is being more vigorously enforced.

This was already put in place by Maine last year and it isn't working out so well, yes SNAP has decreased but the use of food banks has increased. There are some people that abuse the program without question but $4 a day or $125 a month isn't keeping people home. All they are doing is making it more difficult for those at the bottom.

They just gave a enormous tax cut to the wealthy and this is their concern.

As a result, the level of hunger here stayed the same – even worsened, by some measurements – as it improved elsewhere. Food banks set records as LePage celebrated a drop in those receiving SNAP.
Poliquin wants Maine’s experience repeated all over the country. He’s had the work-requirement language inserted in the House version of the 2019 farm bill, which will soon be reconciled with the Senate version into a compromise bill

Up to age 60 still has to register to work and accept employment offers. These rules are already in place. The new ones just tighten them up for 18-50, and don't allow waivers for areas with few jobs. Trump tried to lump in the 60 year olds to be absolutely sure they got kicked off too but that didn't pass. Maybe next time.

Work Rules: With certain exceptions, able-bodied adults between 16 and 60 years of age must register for work, accept an offer of suitable work, and take part in an employment and training program to which they will be referred by the SNAP office.
Generally, able-bodied adults aged 18 to 50 who do not have children and are not pregnant can only get SNAP benefits for 3 months in a 3-year period unless they are working or participating in a work or workfare program. There are a few exceptions.

The average monthly benefit is $125.49 p/p.

The overwhelming number of SNAP beneficiaries are children, elderly and disabled.

The number of people and the $ value of their benefits is statistically insignificant. This is more of a political strategy to create a perception of getting tough.

Beyond a temporary setback it is not a burden for most able- bodied people, 18-49, without children, to work or train for work or attend school 20 hours a week. Imagine those with felony convictions face unique challenges.

Nice stereotype. You forgot President Reagan's famous "welfare queen": the Cadillac Escalade driving woman who fills her shopping cart with lobster and uses food stamps to pay for it.

That was a white boy out in California. Fox News ran a story on it and interviewed him a few years ago.

There is already a long thread on this.
SNAP should be limited to underweight people and children who fall within the economic guidelines. Even if economically challenged, if a potential recipient is overweight, then they should be denied food stamps.

Why are the bleeding heart liberals so concerned over a child or person feeling daily hunger pangs? It's just the body indicating that ones stomach is empty... but considering how overweight all Americans are, there is obviously no famines going on in the States.

IMO children should be taught that it's okay to feel hungry, and it's okay to not immediately reach for a snack or cry for food. It's also okay to skip a meal. This is a First World country and we are surrounded by food temptations. We shouldn't be feeling anxious when we feel hunger. It's really not a big deal unless one has a medical condition like hypoglycemia.

But seriously, the majority of Americans are overweight, including the children and heading towards a diabetes epidemic.
