I don't think there is any remedy. Remember, as you seem to be getting at, the Founders assumed people were rational. They also assumed they were moral and ethical...at least to a degree and when they had common interests.
Jimmy Carter disappeared for a couple days at Camp David, but he was in touch and a doctor was sent to check on him (he was running a number of miles, so deemed OK).....
I don't think there is any way of addressing this except asking the American public not to elect people like Trump. Play with fire and you are going to get burned.
Which happened. And luckily the public said nope, we're not electing a crazy woman who passes out in the street, allows an ambassador to be killed while she does nothing but blame a video, and plays fast and loose with the law.
He would refuse to accept that he isn't the President any more, work behind the scenes to derail the current duly elected President's 2 terms and pose for photo ops with Moochelle.

I haven't read it, but now I'm curious. Have any of you read it?
Read this years ago. As I recall, the politicians were less corrupt, just flawed individuals trying to figure to a solution to an unstable POTUS.
Today we have a president who is quoting a movie as if it is real life, and publicly disagreeing with our Intelligence agencies' report to Congress, and those surrounding him are behaving as if this is perfectly normal, no reason to be concerned.
If this were a novel, can't help but wonder about the ending.
Instead of following the bolded with what you did in the rest of that sentence, I expected it to end 'it would never get published because it would be deemed too fanciful or too implausible'.
