One of the only ways I can somewhat understand is to consider it to be Orwellian on many levels, including, as mentioned previously, this 'newspeak' word from 1984:

It's also why I let it go with some diehards as I see you do also.

Today, some people try to save face. Some people are proud to call it part of their heritage. However, they have to back it up. I'd have more respect for someone if they just admitted that they supported a slave owning cause instead of trying to save face.
It's not healthy or sensible, but when all one cares about is telling someone "stuff it where the sun don't shine", nonsensical ways make sense to said person.
Doublethink it basically a way of making sense of something that will never make sense. A good example is The Exorcism. I'm not much of a horror movie person and I've never watched it. However, I know someone who has and this quote was brought up.
Quote:
Especially important is the warning to avoid conversations with the demon. We may ask what is relevant but anything beyond that is dangerous. He is a liar. The demon is a liar. He will lie to confuse us. But he will also mix lies with the truth to attack us. The attack is psychological, Damien, and powerful. So don't listen to him. Remember that - do not listen.

Doublethink can be compared to that quote from the Exorcist. The best way to perpetuate a lie is a to mix it with some truth. Mixing lies with the truth stirs up confusion. Doublethink is what comes out of it. The person exposed to such contradictory statements ends up in a position where doublethink can take place.
Some persons are not worth listening to. Some persons will mix the truth with lies. Other persons will just attack you when you refuse to accept their lies. That demon spirit spoken of in The Exorcist is like taking poison and putting it in someone's food, and you know it's been tainted. However, said person makes up all kinds of excuses like "this stuff is put in other products and it doesn't kill".
